Las inspecciones “dan una mala imagen”, según los lanzadores

Rob Manfred, comisionado de Major League Baseball (MLB), gritó a todo pulmón que las inspecciones a los lanzadores para encontrar sustancias pegajosas arrancaron exitosamente. Pese a que encontraron a un posible culpable, el proceso fue rápido y los lanzadores mostraron una conducta acorde. Sin embargo, los protagonistas del juego piensan diferente.

Max Scherzer y Sergio Romo, lanzadores activos, dejaron claro públicamente que las revisiones son incómodas. Pero Zach Britton, frente a un micrófono, explicó por qué esos chequeos lastiman al juego y hacen al producto menos atractivo. ¿No es eso lo que buscan desde las oficinas de MLB?

“Si soy un niño que va al juego y le pregunto a mi papá, ‘Oye, ¿Qué sucede? ¿Por qué los están revisando?’, ¿qué va a decir el papá? ‘Bueno, creen que todos hacen trampa’”, cuestionó Britton. “O sea, ¿queremos que de eso se trate este juego, que asumamos que estás haciendo trampa? Es una mala imagen”.

Britton junto a Scherzer, propusieron que las Grandes Ligas utilizara un sistema de cámaras para hacer las revisiones. De esta forma, no se cuestionará la integridad del juego y sus protagonistas podrán continuar con su rutina sobre el montículo sin mayores contratiempos.

El relevista no está solo en esa idea, pues los actores en el campo examinan la situación a largo plazo. Mike Matheny, manager de los Kansas City Royals, advirtió a los rivales que si actúan como Joe Girardi, quien exigió una inspección sobre Scherzer, y piden repetidamente a los umpires a revisar a los pitchers de los Royals, sería una provocación para su equipo.

Manfred, por su parte, dijo estar consciente de todo y sigue abierto a más recomendaciones. Cuando se le preguntó sobre los planes a largo plazo, el comisionado dijo tener confianza, pero no fue lejos en la entrevista.

“No me gusta poner los pies dentro de la arena. Apenas tenemos dos días (de revisiones). Simplemente no tengo suficiente información para decir si esta medida es rígida o va a cambiar”.

El debate subió de tono por las inspecciones

Mientras que los lanzadores utilizaron los medios de comunicación para criticar duramente los nuevos protocolos, en MLB siguen enfocados en mantenerlos. Poco importarán las quejas o solicitudes, desde las oficinas de las Grandes Ligas continuarán con las inspecciones.

“Fuimos realmente transparentes desde el inicio del año de que este era un problema para nosotros y que las cosas necesitaban cambiar. Por eso recopilábamos información. En marzo, fuimos claros en el memorándum que mandamos que si las cosas no cambiaban, íbamos a tomar medidas disciplinarias”, recalcó Manfred. “En las juntas de dueños hubo mucha publicidad alrededor del hecho de que las cosas no habían cambiado. De hecho, habían empeorado”.

Para MLB, que la primera mitad de la temporada haya dominado el pitcheo fue por el uso de sustancias ilegales. Los pitchers utilizaron todo tipo de pegamentos para darle más movimientos a los envíos y eso provocó una desventaja que deterioró al juego.

El promedio de bateo de la liga (.236) estaba en camino de ser el más bajo en la historia del béisbol, un punto menos que en 1968, lo que llevó a la liga a cambiar la altura del montículo. Los continuos juegos sin hit ni carreras, ponches a un ritmo histórico y que abril cerró como el peor mes ofensivo dentro de los registros de la s Grandes Ligas. Los cambios que realizó Major League Baseball (MLB) a la pelota es el principal sospechoso, pero los bateadores tienen otro motivo: el uso de sustancias ilegales.

“Entiendo que el incidente en Filadelfia fue menos que ideal, pero fue un incidente y esperamos que continuemos, como hasta ahora la vasta mayoría de casos, sin esa clase de incidentes”, dijo Manfred.

De terminar con esas prácticas, MLB cumplirá dos objetivos importantes para mejorar el atractivo de su producto. Se limpiará el juego y disminuirá el incremento de los ponches en la actualidad, por lo que aumentará el tiempo de acción en el campo.

“Durante ocho años he estado tratando de descubrir cómo aumentar la rotación de mi recta. Desde el principio lo identifiqué como una gran ventaja”, escribió Bauer para The Players ’Tribune. “Sabía que, si podía aprender a aumentarla mediante el entrenamiento y la técnica, sería enorme. Pero ocho años después, no he encontrado otra forma que no sea usando sustancias extrañas”.

Pero ya MLB puso sus ojos sobre el montículo. En 2021 se demostrará si es una práctica común y el impacto cuando se disminuya el uso de sustancia ilegales en los lanzadores.
