A pesar de contar con un nivel soberbio, hasta ser firmado profesional con los Atléticos de Oakland. El cubano nacido un 2 de julio de 1964 pasó de ser una de las mejores estrellas latinas en el “Big Show”. A ser el menos querido y respetado de este deporte.
Canseco fue el primer jugador de las Grandes Ligas en firmar un 40-40 (40 home runs y 40 bases robadas) en una temporada. También logró ser el primer latino en conseguir un contrato millonario, al ganar 4 millones 700 mil dólares en la temporada 1990.
Era parte de aquel reconocido dúo llamado “The Bash Brothers” en el que Canseco y Mark McGwire hacían batería ofensiva. Los Atléticos quedaron campeones de la Serie Mundial en 1989 bajo las andanzas de estos dos pilares.
Un secreto mal guardado
José Canseco, que tiene 56 años, cayó en desgracia en el béisbol tras confesar en 2005 que había consumido esteroides durante toda su carrera.
Antes de esa confesión Canseco, que estuvo en activo de 1985 a 2001 y fue seis veces Jugador de Las Estrellas. En 1989 trató de atropellar a su primera esposa. Para 1997 fue denunciado por agredir a su segunda mujer y en 2001 fue detenido junto a su hermano gemelo Ozzie (también jugador profesional) por participar en una pelea.
En 2008 José Canseco se quedó completamente arruinado, por lo que probó relanzar su carrera en el deporte con un combate de MMA (Artes Marciales Mixtas) contra Hong Man Choi, un gigante coreano de 2,20 m.
Al quedar revelado su secreto de haber utilizado sustancias para incrementar su rendimiento, dio a conocer más historias de otros excompañeros, en los que acusa de haber utilizado también esteroides.
Libros de confesión
En 2005, Canseco admitió haber usado esteriodes anabólicos junto con Jorge Delgado, Damaso Moreno y Manuel Collado en el libro Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big.
Canseco también afirmó que más del 85% de los jugadores de las Ligas Mayores tomaban esteroides, una cifra que es rechazada por mucha gente del béisbol en los Estados Unidos.
En el libro, Canseco identificó específicamente a sus ex-compañeros de equipo Mark McGwire, Jason Giambi, Rafael Palmeiro, Iván Rodríguez y Juan González como consumidores. Afirmando que él mismo les ayudaba a inyectárselos. La mayoría de los jugadores nombrados en este libro han negado el uso de esteriodes. Aunque Giambi ha admitido que usó esteroides en un testimonio ante un gran jurado que investigó el caso BALCO.
El 13 de diciembre de 2007, José Canseco y Jorge Delgado fueron citados en el Reporte Mitchell. En diciembre de 2007, Canseco también fue nombrado en la declaración jurada de Jason Grimsley. En la cual lo mencionan como un usuario asiduo de esteroides. Canseco y Grimsley fueron compañeros de equipo en 2000 con los New York Yankees.
El 30 de diciembre de 2007, se anunció que se imprimiría la secuela del primer libro de Canseco de nombre Vindicated. Este libro se dijo que mencionarían detalles acerca de Álex Rodríguez y Albert Belle. Sería una clarificación de nombres que no fueron mencionados en el Reporte Mitchell.
Esto último, ocasionó un gran distanciamiento entre los jugadores y el parlanchín José Canseco.

I do enjoy the manner in which you have presented this particular challenge and it does indeed provide me a lot of fodder for thought. However, because of just what I have seen, I only wish as the commentary stack on that individuals remain on point and don’t get started on a soap box regarding some other news of the day.
