«Tienes un Ferrari, uno de los autos de primera línea, y simplemente disfrutas el viaje», dijo el receptor Joe Mauer, quien hizo batería con Santana gran parte de su carrera en Minnesota. “Tener a Johan en el montículo te hacía lucir muy inteligente como receptor. ¿Por qué Johan Santana no ganó el Cy Young en 2005?

La respuesta más popular durante ese año fue la cantidad de victorias, categoría que dominó con facilidad Colón. Para los electores, eso inclinó la balanza a favor del dominicano y no para Johan Santana.

Pero Torii Hunter, quien jugó el jardín central durante esa campaña, tiene una teoría diferente. El patrullero está convencido que por lanzar en Minnesota, un mercado pequeño de los equipos de las Grandes Ligas, perjudicó a Santana. De pertenecer a Boston, Nueva York o Los Ángeles, esa votación habría sido diferente.

“Hablas de los Angelinos en el gran mercado de California y hablas de los Mellizos, que estaban en un mercado pequeño”, comentó Hunter a The Athletic. “Si Johan hubiera estado con los Yankees o en algún lugar que tuviera un mercado más grande que Minnesota, habría jugado en más Juegos de Estrellas, habría obtenido más reconocimiento. Seguramente en una elección actual, Santana se habría quedado con Cy Young. Pero debido al mercado en el que estaba, no recibió ningún respeto».

Un premio que cambiaba su candidatura a la inmortalidad

Pese a que esa decisión luce solo como una injusticia, es inevitable pensar cuán diferente se vería la carrera de Johan Santana en la actualidad si habría ganado el Cy Young en 2005. Tendría tres, uniéndose a una lista de 10 lanzadores con el premio al mejor lanzador de la temporada. Esos pitchers, solo tres no se encuentra en el Salón de la Fama: Roger Clemens; quien carga la etiqueta de consumir esteroides y Clayton Kershaw junto a Max Scherzer, serpentineros todavía activos. Johan Santana no permaneció más de un año en las papeletas para ir a Cooperstown.

Pero el Santana de 2005 era diferente. Tenía más fuerza, podía ser más agresivo y no tenía problema alguno en retar al mejor bateador de la alineación contraria. Después de todo, para conseguir esos números, debía estar en las mejores condiciones de su carrera.

Fuerza, ubicación y un cambio histórico

“Para ese momento estaba lanzando 95 y hasta 97 millas por horas”, recordó Hunter. “Un zurdo lanzando tan fuerte en esa época y tuvo un cambio de 10-12 millas por hora de diferencia con la recta. Eso asusta. Y tenía una slider que llamó «El ecualizador». Ese cambio de Bugs Bunny que tuvo, los muchachos se abanicaban y creo que lo harían tres veces antes de que el lanzamiento llegara al guante. Fue impresionante».

Sin embargo, para Santana la clave estaba en su mente. Se convirtió en su propia competencia, por lo que mejorar con cada presentación que realizaba era su intención y de esa forma labró una campaña que todavía causa admiración entre sus compañeros.

“Siempre quise mejorar”, señaló Santana. “Si lancé siete entradas hoy, entonces mi próxima apertura tenía que ser de siete entradas y un tercio. Si di un par de boletos, para la próximo solo podía dar uno como máximo… Me estaba desafiando a mí mismo dentro del juego. No estaba tratando de hacer nada loco o exagerar las cosas, solo estaba tratando de mantenerme concentrado en lo que quería lograr».

Seguramente por eso, no existe un poco de lamento en la mente de criollo 15 años después. Pese a que su caso todavía se estudia como uno de los más injustos en la historia reciente de las Grandes Ligas, comprende que su rendimiento habla por sí solo, aunque el trofeo no esté en la sala de su casa.

“Déjenme decirles algo, y esta es la realidad: no soy el premio Cy Young (ganador) en 2005 y ni siquiera estaba en segundo lugar. La realidad es que estaba en tercer lugar. Bartolo es el Cy Young de ese año y lo dejamos así», cerró.
