“Me siento muy contento de poder representar a Venezuela en el Preolímpico. Se dieron muchas cosas para yo estar aquí”, le dijo Sánchez a la gerencia de medios de la federación sobre su apunte en la selección de beisbol de Venezuela. “Me estaba preparando para volver a las Mayores. Me había tomado un tiempo para estar con mi familia. Entonces me encontré con Luis Blasini, me presentaron la oportunidad y acepté”.
La primera vez que Aníbal Sánchez se subió a la lomita con el uniforme de Venezuela, en la máxima categoría, fue el 7 de marzo de 2013. La Vinotinto inauguró el Clásico Mundial contra República Dominicana, que posteriormente fue campeón del torneo. Los quisqueyanos tenían a José Reyes, Robinson Canó, Edwin Encarnación, Hanley Ramírez, Nelson Cruz y Carlos Santana en el lineup titular. Sánchez solo sacó un out y le hicieron tres carreras, todas limpias. Ahora tiene la posibilidad de aportar algo para que Venezuela esté por primera vez en el torneo olímpico de beisbol.
El sueño de la selección de beisbol de Venezuela
“Cuando uno es chamo es complicado pensar en beisbol en los Juegos Olímpicos”, recordó Sánchez, quien también resaltó sus deseos de pertenecer a la selección de beisbol de Venezuela. “La nueva camada tiene oportunidad de disfrutar de beisbol en los Juegos Olímpicos. Desde niño siempre soñé con defender la camiseta de Venezuela”.
Con Aníbal Sánchez en el roster, Venezuela comenzará el Preolímpico de las Américas contra Cuba el 31 de mayo. Allí estarán algunas de las mayores potencias del beisbol occidental como Estados Unidos, República Dominicana y Puerto Rico. Solo se repartirá un cupo para la cita ecuménica.
“Ganar una medalla olímpica es lo más difícil. Anualmente hay campeones de Serie Mundial, hay peloteros que nunca han podido jugar una Serie Mundial”, dijo Aníbal Sánchez sobre la posibilidad de lograr algo importante con la selección de beisbol de Venezuela: ir a Tokio. “Poder representar a Venezuela en los Juegos Olímpicos y tener una medalla sería un logro aún mayor”.
Un lanzador de experiencia
Aníbal Sánchez se encuentra como agente libre en este momento en el beisbol organizado. Se ha mostrado ante scouts de diversas organizaciones. No obstante, todavía no ha habido nada concreto. Encaja perfectamente en los peloteros que necesitan los combinados que aspiran en Tokio, pues no se podrán obtener permisos de jugadores que pertenezcan a rosters de 40.
“Hay que trabajar duro para lograr lo que uno quiere. Debe luchar por eso, sea cualquier trabajo o sobresalir. Hay que trabajar y sacrificarse mucho. Trabajarlo, sudarlo”, dijo el primer miembro de la selección de Venezuela para el Preolímpico de beisbol. “A la fanaticada venezolana le digo que sé que formaremos un equipo sólido para competir. Ese apoyo sabroso y caliente que tienen los venezolanos que siga así. No lo pierdan”.
Aníbal Sánchez tiene 15 temporadas de experiencia en las Mayores. Ha jugado para Marlins de Miami, Tigres de Detroit, Nacionales de Washington y Bravos de Atlanta. Fue campeón de la Liga Americana en efectividad en 2013, con 2.57. En 1948.1 innings de por vida, su efectividad es de 4.05 y su WHIP (promedio de rivales embasados por cada capítulo) de 1.31.
