Una de las historias más increíbles que he visto, es la de Abebe Bikila. Era un niño cuando vi un video del maratonista, observaba sus pies, mi papá me dijo “mira, va descalzo”, no le quitaba la mirada, estaba asombrado con aquel delgado corredor de Etiopía.
Perteneció a una familia numerosa y muy pobre, aprendió a leer a los 14 años, fue pastor de cabras, a los 17 se alistó en el ejército de su país, pensando en ganarse el sustento diario.
Bikila de militar a corredor
Vive Bikila la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en medio de la ocupación italiana, eso, hasta 1941, luego con el apoyo de Gran Bretaña, el emperador Haile Selassie, quien era aclamado como la reencarnación de Dios en la tierra según el movimiento rastafari, restituyó su poder.
El mandatario abolió la esclavitud, en ese instante se contabilizaban entre 2 y 4 millones de esclavos de un total de 11 millones de personas.

Fue entonces designado por Onni Niskanen, el entrenador sueco que había contratado Selassie para trabajar en el deporte etíope. Mucha gloria en un evento, primer hombre ganador de su continente, los Juegos Olímpicos, otra historia deportiva increíble, Abebe Bikila pasa frente al Obelisco de Aksum, trofeo de guerra de Mussolini en la invasión a Etiopía en 1935, era su venganza y la de su país, pero con aquella particularidad de hacerlo sin zapatos, viniendo de la miseria y del hambre, de las necesidades humanas, Bikila asombró al mundo, dos horas, 15 minutos y 16 segundos, fue el tiempo que necesitó.
Bikila se para en el podio, suena el himno de Italia y no el de su país. “Que el mundo sepa que Etiopía ha vencido con honores y determinación”.
Un pobre país africano, dominado por una potencia mundial, la victoria de Bikila era desafiante, trascendental, por eso estoy escribiendo de él, creo que es una de las grandes historias de la vida.
Horas antes de su cita en Roma, Bikila se había probado varias marcas de zapatos para correr, ni Adidas, ni Puma, ni las famosas Tiger Onitzuka eran del gusto del corredor que al final optó por desafiar el camino descalzo.
Cuatro años más tarde repite, pero esta vez si lleva calzado.

La frase de Bikila luego de un sufrir un accidente que a la postre le quito la vida, reiteraba que era la voluntad de Dios, todo giraba en torno a esta manera de aceptar la vida y que aceptaba la tragedia, así como aceptó sus victorias, pues tenía que hacerlo para aceptar los hechos de la vida y vivir feliz.
Por cierto, el Obelisco de Aksum fue devuelto a Etiopía en el 2005.
