La noche anterior a aquel juego recordaba el día que llegaba a Ciudad de México. La crítica no daba al equipo venezolano ni para estar en el repechaje a los Juegos Olímpicos que un año más tarde se celebrarían en Rio de Janeiro. La historia era muy similar a la de aquella selección venezolana del preolímpico de Portland de 1992, donde se disputaban los cupos para ir a Barcelona, España.
Aquella selección dirigida por Julio Toro -desde 1990- contra todo pronóstico, venció en un juego clave a un equipo mexicano que había tenido una preparación de primer nivel. Estuvieron en Asia, Europa y Estados Unidos. Tal fue el dolor del coach de México, que el propio Toro tuvo que consolarlo, ya que lloraba desconsoladamente luego del partido.
Toro con un fuerte abrazo trataba de darle tranquilidad, por dentro sonaba el alma llanera a pesar de que Venezuela, por su parte, llegaba en medio de incertidumbre. Sin la preparación adecuada y con los jugadores preguntando por el premio en dinero de lo que fue el campeonato sudamericano de Valencia, Venezuela, logrado un año antes, pero después les escribo sobre eso.
Llegada a México
Mi conciencia periodistica en fraterna lucha con mi amor por la camiseta vinotinto, me indicaba que me callara la boca sobre mis pronósticos de lo que pudiera ocurrir en México. Mi voz interior me decía que mirara la capital de ese gran país y que siguiera revisando en google maps, los lugares más emblemáticos por Polanco, lugar donde se encontraba el hotel donde me hospedería.
Comenzaba el preolímpico 2015 con una selección de Venezuela dirigida por Néstor «Che» García. Nadie fuera de Venezuela daba algo por ella, periodistas, técnicos que se acercaron al hotel, daban como claros favoritos, a la selección local, Argentina, Canadá con sus nueve NBA, incluso Puerto Rico y Dominicana.
En una entrevista a Carl Herrera este manifestaba que aquel juego contra México en Portland, fue clave para terminar de entender que realmente podían hacer el mandado.
Bueno, para esta generación del 2015, ese juego determinante y que sirvió de suiche, fue la victoria contra Panamá 62 x 75 lograda el 9 de septiembre.
El preolímpico estaba como la comida del hotel, llena de condimento y picante.
Los recorridos
Cerca del hotel estaba el bosque de Chapultepec. Me fui a caminar junto a Pedro Luis Moreira, Daniel Gómez y el agente Castor Besteiro. Luego de ir al zoológico, me separé del grupo, pasando frente a unos vendedores ambulantes que mostraban las máscaras de los luchadores libres, pregunté por la de El Santo, 40 años de show, un ídolo en México. «Ocho dólares no más señor, dos por 15» Ahí las dejé. Hoy me arrepiento.
De vuelta al hotel y con Venezuela metida en tercera ronda, misma a donde no accedió ni Puerto Rico, ni Dominicana, ni Panamá. Ahora el tema era Canadá, que ya había vencido abiertamente a Venezuela en primera fase. Nos dejaría fuera, que no había chance, yo apuntaba al Zócalo y al museo de cera, al museo de Carlos Slim y también a los bicitaxis, como tareas de mi día libre, pero antes se me atravesó Steve Nash y… YA LES CONTÉ QUE ME DIJO EN UNA COLUMNA ANTERIOR.
Los muchachos se seguían quejando de la comida, realmente todo tenia mucho condimento. Algunos incluso comentaban que habían conseguido un ‘huequito’ venezolano muy cerca, pero yo debía estirar los viáticos.
El día del juego había mucha ansiedad lógicamente. En el lobby Nelson «Kako» Solórzano soltó esta frase que se me quedó en el ambiente. «Hay algo en el ambiente…Hay algo en el ambiente»
Otra vez la historia contra Canadá por el pase a los Juegos Olímpicos.
En el palco de prensa todos los periodistas venezolanos nos unimos para cantar el himno nacional, ha sido uno de los momentos mas divertidos y emotivos de mi carrera.
Hoy la máscara de El Santo debe estar como en 20 dólares…No mames wey.
