Mitos y realidades de la fisioterapia que deberías saber

A causa del desconocimiento del rol del fisioterapeuta, muchas personas tienen conceptos erróneos sobre la fisioterapia, lo que ha hecho que se creen muchos mitos. Es bastante habitual que se consulte a un fisioterapeuta únicamente cuando se ha sufrido una lesión, pero en realidad su función no sólo es la rehabilitación.

Nuestra tarea es trabajar desde la prevención postural y cualquier alteración neuromusculoesquelética que se debe tomar en cuenta cuando aparecen esos dolores silenciosos en las noches. Buscar al profesional indicado puede aportar más soluciones que interrogantes.

En esta oportunidad te contaré seis mitos y sus realidades.

Mito 1: La fisioterapia es dolorosa

Realidad: La fisioterapia no es dolorosa, ya que trata de aliviar el dolor. Existen ciertas terapias o ejercicios que sirven para movilizar las articulaciones rígidas que, en algunas ocasiones, pueden doler un poco; pero en general, la fisioterapia no provoca dolor.

Mito 2: La fisioterapia solo es útil para lesiones o accidentes

Realidad: Todos los departamentos de medicina trabajan en conjunto con la fisioterapia por sus múltiples beneficios. Neurología, pediatría, cardiología, deporte, obstetricia y ginecología, todas involucran fisioterapia, ya que es una terapia súper especializada y muy extensa. Es un error pensar que la fisioterapia solo ayuda a fortalecer los músculos y las articulaciones después de accidentes o lesiones.

Mito 3: La fisioterapia puede ayudar a evitar la cirugía

Realidad: No siempre, pero esto depende de la condición del paciente. Para los problemas musculoesqueléticos; una variedad de trastornos que involucran músculos, huesos, tendones, vasos sanguíneos, nervios y otros tejidos blandos, la fisioterapia tiene un papel muy importante. En estos casos, tiene sentido optar por la fisioterapia para tener más posibilidades de recuperación.

En otros casos, como por ejemplo un problema espinal en el que se comprime un nervio y es necesaria una cirugía, la fisioterapia en sí misma no ayudará.

Mito 4: La fisioterapia solo son masajes y ejercicios simples

Realidad: Además del ejercicio, la fisioterapia también utiliza otro tipo de técnicas para aliviar el dolor y acelerar la recuperación. Por ejemplo, con electroestimulación, ultrasonidos, punción seca, técnicas analíticas de terapia manual que es el fuerte real de lo fisioterapeutas, la curación puede ser más rápida.

Mito 5: La fisioterapia está restringida a lesiones deportivas o problemas relacionados con los músculos

Realidad: Hoy en día, la fisioterapia se adopta incluso para cualquier tipo de parálisis, recuperación postoperatoria, varios tipos de reemplazos de articulaciones, así como atención prenatal y postnatal; por lo que no está delimitada a lesiones deportivas.

Mito 6: Para consultar a un fisioterapeuta la referencia es esencial

Realidad: Esto no es obligatorio, para ciertos malestares como el dolor agudo en la espalda o el dolor de cuello se puede consultar directamente a un fisioterapeuta. Sin embargo, es importante diagnosticar primero la causa del dolor en vez de tratarlo directamente. Por lo tanto, es conveniente acudir a un médico que conozca la historia exacta del paciente y luego pueda derivar a un fisioterapeuta para tratar al paciente en consecuencia.

A través de los años, la población de deportistas ha podido entender la importancia del fisioterapeuta para mejorar su rendimiento.

El resto de las personas que no realizan actividad física también pueden ser parte de este grupo que se trabaja por medio de la prevención. Recuerda que trabajas y estás mucho tiempo en una silla, o cargando cosas. Además, si haces las tareas del hogar tienes mayor agotamiento. Los dolores aparecen de la misma manera que en un atleta, no esperes tener una limitación prolongada para conocer sobre la fisioterapia.
