En el año 2013, la capital de Perú fue elegida como sede del evento más importante en el alto rendimiento después de los Juegos Olímpicos: los Panamericanos.
El 11 de octubre de ese año estaba en el salón principal del Hotel Westin de Toronto. Veía como todo el comité organizador de los Juegos Panamericanos de 2019 celebraba a gritos la elección, por primera vez en su historia, de Lima como sede de unos Juegos Panamericanos. Después de días de trabajo y de formar parte del proyecto en la parte de comunicaciones Bolívar 2019, finalmente Perú se impuso por encima de Santiago de Chile en «la gran final» de las ciudades candidatas a organizar el evento deportivo más importante de Las Américas.
Cambios inesperados
Desde ese entonces hasta hoy pasaron muchas, muchísimas cosas entorno al que considero mi evento favorito del ciclo olímpico. Al que más veces he asistido en cobertura (4 veces desde 2007) y el que me genera más emociones, ya que la paridad en muchas disciplinas es absoluta. En el año 2016, decidí emprender nuevas metas, una alternativa distinta a la que Venezuela me ofrecía, con el riesgo de saber que probablemente no volvería a ver de cerca a los Juegos Panamericanos.
En abril de 2017 siguieron los cambios. La organización encargada de llevar a cabo los Juegos Panamericanos asumió un nuevo mando. El chileno Neven Ilic, quien fuera presidente del Comité Olímpico de su país en el fallido intento de ser sede panamericana de 2013, asumió las riendas de ODEPA y al cabo de muy poco tiempo iniciaron los cambios más determinantes para el deporte en Las Américas con la transformación a Panamsports. Un concepto innovador que ha le ha dado un vuelco positivo a la manera de ver a deporte y sus verdaderos protagonistas: los atletas.

En agosto de ese mismo, año la vida comenzó acercarme de nuevo a uno de mis grandes amores y es así como el día 28 estaba cerca, nuevamente, en la cobertura en Miami de la Reunión del Comité Ejecutivo de la naciente Panamsports. Con ello, la esperanza en medio de un proceso de adaptación en la vida del inmigrante de poder seguir cumpliendo sueños.
En octubre, pero de 2018, volví a coincidir en Miami, esta vez en un evento mucho más grande. El primer Foro Continental de los Atletas de América. Una oportunidad dantesca de poder seguir sumando experiencias dentro del área de los Juegos Panamericanos. Fueron tres días de aprendizaje absoluto, junto a luminarias del deporte como Walter Pérez, Isabel Swan y Carlos Santiago. Ahí aprendí a ver la organización desde el lado de los atletas, sus deberes y derechos. Aprendí de su evolución y aspiraciones después del retiro.
Unos Panamericanos que estaban en mi destino
Sin saberlo, al cabo de dos años y en medio de los vaivenes naturales de lo que significa dejar tu país y empezar literalmente desde cero, llegó nuevamente una oportunidad ligada a los Juegos que tanto amo. Era elegido para formar parte del equipo de comunicaciones que iría a los Panamericanos. A esos Juegos que ví, en 2013, como Perú ganaba la sede. Ahora formaría parte de la organización.
Primera tarea: rueda de prensa con Luis Fonsi
Fonsi fue el artista invitado a poner el show en la ceremonia de apertura en el Estadio Nacional de Lima. Con todo gusto lo asumí. Me fui con la host de Panamsports, la peruana Alexandra Horler, y cumplimos el objetivo. Que todos entendieran que el récord man en reproducciones de Youtube formaría parte de la fiesta más grande de américa. El éxito estaba garantizado.
Segunda tarea: Luis Fonsi va a la villa de los atletas
En esa misma tónica acompañamos al artista puertorriqueño, quien atónito no podía creer que estaba compartiendo con los atletas de su propio país; que en ese momento sufría una de las crisis políticas más grandes de su historia. En medio de la euforia de tener a un artista de esa calidad en la villa panamericana, después de muchas horas sin descanso, el objetivo también se cumplió.
Quien iba a decir que nueve años después de aquella tarde de 2013, estaría en el mismo Hotel Westin, pero de la capital peruana hablando con Luis Fonsi. En una conversación poco usual, le hice saber al boricua que antes de navidad en 2017 nos habíamos conocido en Miami.
Sí, en Miami. Para la fecha, trabajaba en la cocina de un reconocido restaurante de la ciudad donde muchas celebridades hacían sus fiestas. En aquella oportunidad me tocó cocinar para Micaela y Rocco, los hijos del cantante quienes por cierto cumplen el mismo día. Fonsi no lo podía creer, me preguntó que cómo llegué hasta aquí, fue entonces cuando aprendí una de las lecciones más grandes de toda mi vida. Cuando emigras, la velocidad de los sueños es una oda al más grande éxito del mencionado cantante: Despacito.
