La Concacaf y la Fifa acordaron que la primera ronda de clasificación de esa confederación para el Mundial de Catar 2022 se inicie en marzo de 2021 y no en octubre-noviembre de este año, como estaba previsto, junto a la elaboración de un nuevo calendario dada la actual situación sanitaria en la zona.
La Fifa confirmó la decisión, este martes 8 de septiembre, tras las reuniones recientes que la Confederación de Norteamérica, Centroamérica y el Caribe (Concacaf) ha mantenido con sus federaciones, otros grupos de interés y la propia federación internacional sobre los planes de reanudación de las competiciones de la región.

Muchas partes de la región continúan atravesando situaciones de salud pública muy desafiantes y ese ha sido un factor clave en esta decisión. Además, varios países de la confederación han aplicado restricciones de viaje y requisitos de cuarentena que dificultarían enormemente la disputa de partidos internacionales por parte de 30 selecciones nacionales.
Concacaf trabajará con la FIFA para finalizar un nuevo calendario, comenzado con la primera ronda en marzo de 2021, que se comunicará a su debido tiempo.
La principal razón
En el comunicado, la Confederación dejó claro que fue por un tema de salud y para ayudar al control de la pandemia en algunos países donde todavía no cesa el alto número de contagios por día. Siendo Panamá y Guatemala dos de los más afectados. Otro de los puntos por los que prefirieron posponer el inicio de las eliminatorias tiene que ver con las restricciones que algunos países.
A diferencia de la Conmebol que la semana pasada dio a conocer junto con la FIFA. Que el calendario para este 2020 iniciará el 8 de octubre.
