La sala estaba llena, como cuando entrenaba en Caracas, pero esta vez en Buenos Aires y con 95 kilos. El esgrimista venezolano, Eduardo Salgado, enfrentó a los mejores de Argentina. Aunque tenía siete años sin competir, pudo impresionar al entrenador que le abriría las puertas que en su país le cerraron.
En diciembre de 2018, el sablista aterrizaba en suelo porteño con una maleta y un bolso de esgrima. Su idea al emigrar no era dedicarse al deporte, ya que en 2011 se había retirado para trabajar en el Metro de Caracas.
Al hacer su equipaje, él se aferró a sus implementos como un niño que abraza a su peluche favorito. No le importaba tener que explicar en cada alcabala para salir de Venezuela que era esgrimista ni pagar el sobre equipaje. Él estaba seguro de que su uniforme, la careta y el sable le serían de gran ayuda.
“No vine con la intención de entrenar, sino trabajar y salir adelante. Igual me traje mis equipos. Yo viajé en autobús hasta Brasil y de ahí para acá en avión. La Guardia Nacional me preguntaba qué llevaba en el bolso. Siempre dije que primero me quedaba yo, pero mi equipaje de esgrima se iba conmigo”, cuenta Salgado desde Buenos Aires.
A la semana de haber llegado a la ciudad del tango, el venezolano comenzó a trabajar en un autolavado. En una de las jornadas nocturnas aprovechó para escribirle a una esgrimista argentina que había conocido años atrás. Él quería saber dónde podía entrenar sable. Ella le habló de la Fundación Argentina de Esgrima (FAE), lugar donde entrena la olímpica Belén Pérez Maurice con Lucas Saucedo.
A pesar de tener esa referencia, Eduardo al día siguiente descubriría una sala de esgrima en el centro de la ciudad. El entrenador, sin verlo en la pedana, lo rechazó y le dijo que debía pagar para entrenar. El caraqueño no tenía dinero, se dio la vuelta y a los días decidió ir a la FAE. “Yo dije aquí es, aquí hay buen nivel”, recuerda con emoción.
De hacer esgrima para entrar al liceo a desempolvar el uniforme en Argentina
El esgrimista venezolano inició en el deporte para cumplirle un deseo a su madre: entrar en el liceo Germán Villalobo, actual Liceo Caracas. Eduardo a los 11 años no sabía qué era la esgrima, estaba negado a practicar algo desconocido. Sin embargo, su entrenador Jesús Moreno se encargaría de presentarle el sable, un arma para ágiles que lo enamoró.
“En mi primer torneo quedé de tercero en un campeonato nacional. Luego, en 2003 fui campeón nacional infantil. Ya después pasé a cadete y asistí a varios Sudamericanos; gané en 2005 y 2006. En 2007 también fui campeón panamericano. Ya en mayores no tuve oportunidades porque había muchos problemas entre mi entrenador y la federación”, narra Salgado sobre su experiencia en suelo nacional.
En 2008, el sablista se fracturó uno de sus pies, por lo que dejó de entrenar durante dos años. Al regresar, un entrenador extranjero le dio la oportunidad de ir a Hungría por un año. La aventura solo duró 365 días. Al pisar su país, no consiguió respaldo económico para seguir compitiendo, así que aceptó la propuesta de trabajar en el Metro de Caracas. Solo iba a la sala de esgrima dos veces a la semana como hobby.
Debido a la situación económica de Venezuela, millones de personas han emigrado a otros países. Eduardo fue uno más que se sumó a las estadísticas en 2018. En aquella Navidad su regalo sería el renacer como sablista en la pedana de la Fundación Argentina de Esgrima. En ese lugar desempolvó su uniforme para demostrar que aún tenía cualidades.
“Desde el primer momento me dijeron que tenía las puertas abiertas. El entrenador Lucas me preguntó si había llevado las cosas y que me cambiara. Yo sentía que estaba tirando una final olímpica. Tenía muchos nervios y me decía a mí mismo: Eduardo, no la cagues. Pero me fue bien y me decían que todavía era bueno”, relata entre risas sobre el día que decidió ponerse a las órdenes del entrenador argentino.
El sablista número uno de Argentina es venezolano
El esgrimista recibió el apoyo incondicional del equipo; le pagaron un preparador físico y lo ayudaron a conseguir el departamento donde vive actualmente. Además, le dieron la oportunidad de entrenar a unos chicos para que ganara un sueldo. Su respuesta a tanta ayuda fue el esfuerzo que se tradujo en victorias.
Eduardo Salgado durante dos meses trabajó también en un kiosco de 7:00 de la noche a 7:00 de la mañana. Con pocas horas de sueño se iba a correr diez kilómetros por las calles de Puerto Madero en Buenos Aires. A la tarde entrenaba en la fundación de 4:00 a 6:00 para luego ir al kiosco nuevamente. Esa rutina era tan agotadora como los combates, ya que no había día libre.
“Hubo un fin de semana que me tocaba competir y en el kiosco no me dieron permiso. Tuve que tomar diez tazas de café. Pero todo sacrificio tiene su recompensa”, destaca el atleta de 30 años que, posteriormente, manejó un auto como uber y luego decidiría quedarse solo como entrenador.
En 2019, el sablista venezolano no paró de subirse a las pedanas y ganar hasta campeonatos nacionales. Todos hablaban de él. Su entrenador Lucas Saucedo estaba seguro de que podía ganarse un cupo en el equipo nacional. De hecho, recibió en el Comité Olímpico de Argentina la condecoración como atleta del año de la Federación de Esgrima de Argentina.
“Yo soy el actual número uno”, exclama con el orgullo de haber brillado fuera de su tierra natal.
Su sueño olímpico con la albiceleste
Eduardo ahora cubre su rostro con una careta albiceleste, jamás se lo imaginó. Él desde niño había soñado con la tricolor y un uniforme que dijera: Salgado VEN. Lo tuvo, pero dentro de poco dirá Argentina. El sablista está esperando sus papeles de la nacionalidad para poder competir oficialmente como selección nacional del país que lo adoptó.
“Es un cambio fuerte. A veces he pensado en estar ahí en el podio y que suene el himno nacional, pero no al que siempre me adapté”, responde con un tono pausado. Aún le duele reconocer que no fue profeta en su tierra.
Salgado confiesa su amor por ambas naciones; una lo parió y la otra, más que criarlo, lo revivió como deportista. “Lo que no me dio mi país, me lo está dando este. Qué mejor manera de agradecerle que llevarlo a lo más alto del podio”, afirma.
Su proyecto de vida es mostrar su mejor esgrima en los Juegos Olímpicos París 2024 con el uniforme de Argentina. En el corazón siempre llevará el amarillo, azul y rojo. Sin embargo, cada punto irá dedicado a quienes le abrieron la puerta sin importarle su nacionalidad.
