Sin dar mayores detalles, la esposa de Marvin Hagler confirmó la muerte del pugilista a los 66 años. Nunca fue noqueado, pero sí hizo dormir en la lona a 52 de los 62 rivales a los que venció. Se apagó la luz de un boxeador de época que fue exaltado al Salón de la Fama de esa disciplina y a quien apodaron “La Maravilla”.
“Lamento hacer un anuncio muy triste. Hoy lamentablemente mi amado esposo Marvin falleció inesperadamente en su casa, aquí en New Hampshire. Nuestra familia pide que respetes nuestra privacidad durante este difícil momento. Con amor”. Así anunció su esposa, Kay Hagler, el adiós del campeón.
Marvin Hagler fue un campeón de peso mediado que se enfrentó a los más grandes. Casi siempre ganó, pero cuando perdió lo hizo ante otras leyendas. Precisamente la pelea que marcó su retiro se saldó con una derrota ante el no menos famoso Sugar Ray Leonard en 1987. El icónico Caesars Palace de Las Vegas fue el lugar donde colgó los guantes.
Sus peleas son consideradas joyas del boxeo, pero el primer round del combate ante Tommy Hearns en 1985 es inolvidable. Más aun en tiempos en los que se acostumbra que los pegadores salgan a estudiarse los primeros asaltos, aquellos titanes fueron a noquear apenas escucharon el campanazo inicial.
En aquella noche en Nevada se disputaron los títulos medianos de la CMB, AMB y FIB. Ambos pugilistas estaban en la élite del deporte en la mitad de aquella década. Aunque se terminó relativamente rápido, en el tercer asalto, ambos demostraron que no tuvieron miedo por lo que ese primer round es considerado el mejor de la historia.
“Era un acontecimiento mundial y además el combate cumplió con lo deseado. Hearns vino a pelear, en el sentido literal, a llevarse el cinturón, sin armisticios, pero yo me negué a entregárselo”.
Marvin Hagler a Marca
Su registro de peleas es extenso, la clase de sus rivales fue indiscutible. En esa lista hay un nombre que es familiar y es el del venezolano Fulgencio Obelmejías, un boxeador de San José de Río Chico que lo retó un par de veces. En ambas salió derrotado.
La primera derrota de Obelmejías fue ante “La Maravilla”
A finales de la década de los 70, Fulgencio Obelmejías era uno de los boxeadores más importantes en Suramérica. Victorias ante Ángel José Ortiz, Jamie Thomas, Luis Arias, Sammy Floyd, George Lee y «Sugar» Ray Phillips hicieron pensar en que sus retos debían ser mayores.
Fue así como en 1980 superó al excampeón mundial Elisha Obed de Bahamas. Esa victoria hizo subir la apuesta y arriesgas su invicto de 30 peleas, 28 de ellas por la vía rápida, para retar a Marvin Hagler.
La pelea se dio en el Boston Garden de Estados Unidos el 17 de enero de 1981. En esa noche se disputaron los títulos del peso mediano de la AMB y CMB. La “Maravilla” Hagler derrotó al venezolano por KO técnico en el octavo asalto, reteniendo los cinturones y propinándole la primera derrota al mirandino.
Obelmejías no quedó conforme con su pelea y siguió preparándose para buscar la revancha. Uno a uno fueron cayendo retadores como Norberto Rufino, Joe Gonsalves, Wayne Warker, el excampeón mundial del peso mediano Jr. Eddie Gazo.
Esas victorias lo hicieron volver a retar a Hagler. Esta vez el combate se llevó a cabo en Italia en 1982. Allí, en el Teatro Ariston de San Remo, La Maravilla Hagler nuevamente lo vencería por KO técnico.
Después de aquella derrota, Obelmejías no lo intentaría más ante Hagler. Se radicó en Italia desde donde ganó cinco de sus siguientes ocho peleas.
Lo que vino después del venezolano
Marvin Hagler tuvo pelear memorables después de haber vencido un par de veces al venezolano. Un año después superó al panameño Roberto “Mano e’ Piedra” Durán, reteniendo los títulos medianos de la CMB, AMB y FIB.
En 1987 cayó ante Sugar Ray Leonard en la pelea que marcó su retiro. Esa noche perdió los títulos medianos que celosamente guardó por siete años. Su famoso rival venía de poco más de tres años de retiro y en un peso que no era el suyo. La decisión de los jueces aún se discute, pero la pelea fue la última.
