La pelota vasca es un deporte poco común, tradicional del norte de España, el cual tiene sus raíces en el País Vasco, Navarra y La Rioja. En Sudamérica es conocido por quienes lo practican, pero llega a ser ignorado por quienes no logran escuchar de él. En Venezuela es practicado en diferentes lugares, uno de ellos es en Mérida, donde habría surgido la práctica de este deporte en el país.
Rosa Virginia Díaz Guerrero es una deportista de gran referencia en la pelota vasca de Venezuela. En la actualidad, está retirada del deporte profesional y está radicada en la Ciudad Juíz de Fora, en Brasil; donde se dedica a la formación de tenistas.
Díaz nació en la ciudad de Mérida, el 6 de Julio de 1989, desde niña estuvo interesada en el deporte en general. Practicó natación, karate y a los 10 años comenzó con la raqueta, disciplina en la que destacó por ser muy aplicada. A los 15 años comenzó una formación más profesional, llegando a competir en los juegos nacionales Deportivos Andes 2005; sin embargo, para ese entonces no consiguió mayor logro.
La transición
Los cambios de modalidades dentro del deportes no siempre son fructíferos; pocos deportistas llegan realmente a tener un buen desempeño en una disciplina diferente. Pero, Rosa y su compañera Patricia Toro demostraron lo contrario, cuando el profesor Francisco Padilla hizo el reclutamiento de deportistas en 2006, para los Juegos Nacionales Deportivos Llanos 2007, ellas pasaron del tenis de campo a Pelota Vasca.
Rosa y Patricia comenzaron su preparación en el complejo deportivo Luis Ghersi Govea, el cual contaba con dos áreas de juego que cumplían con las medidas reglamentarias de treinta metros, para su preparación profesional en esta nueva modalidad de dupla. Inmediatamente, ambas pulieron juego y consiguieron su primera medalla de oro en los Juegos Llanos 2007.
«Fue un sueño junto con mi compañera, siempre observábamos como otros eran quienes se llevaban las medallas, en esta oportunidad éramos nosotras, entramos al baño y llorábamos de la emoción”, contó, con nostalgia, Díaz.
Experiencias internacionales
Ese mismo año, Rosa y su compañera lograron disputar su primer gran compromiso internacional: el primer Mundial de Pelota Vasca sub-22, en Valdepeñas, Madrid. Aunque llegaron con las mejores intenciones, la experiencia pesó más en el terreno de juego; quedando eliminadas en primera ronda y sin ninguna posibilidad.
Para el 2009, las atletas venezolanas viajaron a la Copa del Mundo en Tenerife. Para ese entonces tenían mayor experiencia y mejor desempeño deportivo; por esta razón, con mucho esfuerzo, consiguen el 4to lugar del mundo.
«Habíamos quedado cuartas del mundo, pero la exigencia era tal que aún no llegábamos al nivel de las grandes potencias como España y Francia», contó Rosa.
Más tarde, en 2010, participaron en el campeonato absoluto en Pau Francia y, nuevamente, enfrentaron al equipo francés por el pase a semifinales. En esa oportunidad, en el partido, que era a 30 puntos, cayeron 30 a 26; un avance bastante notorio comparado con Tenerife donde cayeron 30 a 3. La comunidad internacional empezó, entonces, a tener más respeto por la selección de Venezuela.
Con mucho esfuerzo, en el año 2012 consiguieron quedar campeonas del Sudamericano de Chile. Luego viajaron durante dos meses a Lyon-Francia, con motivo de su preparación para los Juegos Bolivarianos de Lima 2013. Allá se unieron a una comunidad vasca, en la que jugaban torneos semanales; de esta manera, alcanzando un nivel deportivo optimo, que les permitió llegar al más alto nivel en Perú.
En Lima 2013 consiguieron dos medallas de oro, al derrotar a Chile en la modalidad de Frontón en paleta y Frontenis. Escucharon por primera vez el Himno Nacional en una competencia internacional.
El siguiente paso para las atletas criollas fueron los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe en Veracruz–México. Allá lograron mantener el nivel deportivo alcanzado en año anterior y alcanzaron la final.
“Ya el hecho de haber llegado a la final contra México era un hito para nosotras, el asegurar una medalla de plata, luego de derrotar a Cuba es como conseguir la victoria; sin duda estos fueron los mejores años de mi carrera, aunque mi meta siempre fue ser campeona del mundo”, reveló Rosa.
A sus 30 años de edad, Rosa continua su formación como profesional, en la Universidad Federal de Juíz de Fora. Aunque es una atleta profesional retirada, no está inactiva; todavía el tenis y la raqueta siguen siendo parte de su vida, al igual que la pelota vasca, en la que compite al menos una vez al año en Sao Paulo, único lugar en Brasil donde se practica.
“Una de mis metas puede ser abrir una Federación de pelota vasca brasileña, incluso ser entrenadora del equipo brasileño de pelota vasca en torneos internacionales. Pero, a corto plazo, lo que deseo alcanzar es ser profesora universitaria”, concluyó Rosa Díaz.
